Origin and Development
Blueberry is the common name for commercially sold species of both genus Vaccinium corymbosum (Northern Highbush) and Vaccinium virgatum (Rabbiteye), from the Ericaceae family and native to North America. Late past century, selected varieties started being cultivated in Cantabria.
In recent years, the dedicated surface to blueberry growing in the Cantabrian cornice is continously increasing.
New and enhanced varieties have been gradually introduced, thanks to the propitious climatic and soil conditions offered by the Cantabrian cornice.
Benefits and Properties
Blueberry is a low caloric content fruit with bactericide, antiseptic, antioxidant and anticancer properties, besides being a great source of Vitamin C and fiber.
It is one of the most important so-called Superfoods and it’s highly recommended on any healthy diet, reason why its demand is continuosly increasing.
